The bungee jumping chicken of Huntington

The beauty of homeschooling is that it allows you the time and freedom to disengage from the public school rat race and consider other points of view or conclusions.

While living in Huntington, Vermont during the mid 1990's we raised our own chickens. If you've ever raised meat birds you'd know they are specifically bred for rapid growth. Unfortunately, a drawback for some chickens to that accelerated development is the inability to walk after several weeks.

We had one such bird whom we named Harriet. Being unable to walk made it impossible for Harriet to free range with the remainder of the flock. This was a problem, not only for poor Harriet but for us as well. She was too young for butchering and too disabled to forage on her own. We needed to find a solution to Harriet's dilemma.

After much thought we decided to outfit Harriet for mobility. We fashioned a harness for her using our young son's old pajama top. Harriet's legs fit neatly into the small sleeves and the shirt had several snaps in the back for fastening. The back of the pajama top was then attached to a bungee cord which hung from the barn ceiling. Harriet was lifted up, using this make-shift harness, relieving the weight from her legs and she was able to walk or jump a few steps in any direction. She was then able to peck at her food and water as she normally would have. With this contraption Harriet was able to maintain her growth and her dignity as a chicken.

Without the artificially hurried pace of a school-centered life, we have always had the time and freedom to find our own solutions or solve problems that arise in our day-to-day existence. Sometimes those problems have been minor (not to Harriet) and at times they have been monumental. With homeschooling we've always managed to overcome those many obstacles with our family and sanity intact.  Outside forces sometimes caused those problems but we own our decisions and actions in dealing with them. It made us stronger, wiser and closer as a homeschooling family.

As for Harriet, later that summer she served us well and joined her flock at our dinner table. Well nourished children, both physically and academically, was our happy ending to this tale of the bungee jumping chicken of Huntington.

3 Good Reasons Why NOT To Use Public Schools

Are parents paying attention to the news and trends this year? Are they uncertain what to think about the economy or the tranquility of the world? Are the extreme weather patterns we're experiencing a fluke?  For instance, here's a sampling of what's happening in our world:

Global Recession

Drought

Floods & Wildfires

Trends

Food Prices

Education

WWIII

It's time to keep your family close, not only for monetary reasons but for safety as well. For homeschoolers every day is a 'snow' day. For homeschoolers every day is a Saturday! Three good reasons why you should consider NOT sending your child to public school this fall include:

1) Safety...know where your children are at ALL times, especially your very young children. Today, the schools are full of frustrated and dangerous bullies, including staff members who work there. Not only are the schools dangerous to the health of your child but they undermine your child's spirituality, learning and happiness.

2) Money...you can save a bundle by not sending your child to public school. You'll save on transportation, clothing, meals, fundraising, sports, club dues and a myriad of other hidden expenses. You and your children can work together at a home-based business and supplement their education with a free library card and the internet for all the information the world has to offer.

3) Education...let's face it, the public schools are failing to educate unless you consider outcome based learning an education. Homeschoolers are open-sourced learners and test way above their public schooled peer group. Even if you work full-time you CAN homeschool. We're being hornswoggled into collapse by our own ignorance

Anyone, besides me, ready to go back to the horse and buggy days? I mean literally? I grew up on a rural Vermont farm with 9 brothers and sisters. We were 2 miles from the village and 13 miles from the nearest city. We were self-sufficient, rarely saw doctors, made or grew most everything we needed and we were happy. My siblings and I learned how to milk cows, ride and drive horses, grow gardens, raise livestock, fish, hunt, fix things, forage and we learned how to get along. As children nature was our toy box. We resembled the Waltons in many ways. We walked the 2 miles to a two-room schoolhouse for grades 1-6, along with about 12 neighbor children, or to ride the school bus for high school six miles away.

If the present economic situation in this country keeps deteriorating and we're eventually forced to shut down transit, the box stores, the albatross public schools and other entities, we'll need to become LOCAL once again, the way it was 100 years ago. By local I mean we’ll get most of our supplies and fulfill our needs closer to home. We’ll be more dependent on local businesses, friends, family and neighbors. I can deal with that. For me, I can return to my roots and I know I'll be fine. But, what about you?

We need to weed out the welfare system, the public school system, the banking system, the political system and focus our military on protecting our nation, not policing the world. Taxes are eating everyone alive and for what? Parents live in fear of government with every decision they make concerning their child's welfare and upbringing. This is a major reason why I hammer down on public schooling so hard because that is one of the main places where all this nonsense is bred. People are so hornswoggled by the schools we have an uneducated citizenry that can't function properly anymore.

If we're 'forced' to dial back our present day existence people will have to rethink this calamity we're in. Some (maybe many) people will get hurt but with any disaster it has a way of bringing out the best in us. I want to see this world return to a more meaningful way of life on a more humane level. Sure, I use the internet, electric grid, my vehicle for business and joy riding, but if all that stopped I’d adapt. I’d overcome and I’d improvise too, just like the Marines.

The politicians in this country are out of control. The state and federal governments are out of control. Taxes and inflation are out of control. Police departments and social workers are out of control. Public schools are out of control. Debt is out of control. Bankers have long been out of control and the mainstream media is too controlled. A total collapse, if it’s going to happen, can’t arrive soon enough for me. Let’s get this pain over with. Let’s get on with recovering and living in a less complicated and corrupt world.
