State: Older students struggle in math and science: Rutland Herald Online

No surprise here. I've actually sat in on homeschool hearings conducted by the DOE (Department of Education) and listened to these ninnyhammers tell parents their (the parents) standards are too high for their children. HUH?! Yup! The state's Department of Education doesn't want parents setting their standards too high for their children. And they wonder why parents are flocking to homeschooling here in this state by the droves without enrolling in the state's home study program.

"It also allows school administrators to suspend or expel a student for an action that does not occur during the school day or on school property."

"Does NOT occur during the school day or ON school property!" Yes, you read correctly. So ANYTHING your child does or says in the privacy of your home can now be construed as bullying by a school administrator. I wonder how many Vermont children and their parents will get caught in this twisted web? No need to discipline your child anymore because the schools plan to do it for you 24/7.

72% of Vermont schools are flunkies

According to this article in the Burlington Free Press 72% of Vermont school are flunking. Yeah, but meanwhile everyone sure is having a good time at the ball games, prom and at the free lunch table! Who cares if the graduates can't read, write, spell or calculate. They know how to put condoms on cucumbers and fund raise for charities! The saddest part is the children have no idea they are being denied a real education.

"The shooting happened just a day after faculty and staff at the school had completed a suicide prevention course."

Makes you wonder what exactly is discussed and what exactly the students are subjected to in this so-called prevention course.

"As for Menning's friends and fellow students, they were kept in the classroom following the tragedy and scheduled exams at the school continued as normal."

What?! Continued as normal? These people can't be serious. Your friend and classmate just kills himself in the school bathroom and the staff expects you to take your exams and continue as normal? Is it any wonder these children feel like no one cares and there is no other way out of the insanity known as public schooling. Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh!

My heart goes out to this beautiful child (yes, 15 is still a child) and the countless others who had to endure but could no longer take the years of bullshit that goes on in our public schools. Their world is built up around the daily indoctrination and institutionalization they receive starting at the tender ages of 3 to 5 years old, depending on whether they start preschool or kindergarten. Even now our latest governor wants to make preschool mandatory in this state for these unsuspecting children. When will they ever learn? Oh wait, they already know the damage they cause to these young lives but it's all about their union members getting a big fat PAYCHECK!

Rest in peace my dearest little man. They can no longer harm you because you reside with the angels now.

Revolving door principals.

When I attended junior and senior high school we had 5 different principals in those 6 years! I'm just happy a dear girl I know at Poultney High School had the good sense to leave it behind this year and start homeschooling. Life is so much better when people lead family centered lives...not school centered lives. Move on people. There is a whole new world out there beyond public schooling that's full of wonder, truth and success. You don't need a diploma to partake in it either!

According to the Burlington Free Press the 10 most 'persistently low-achieving' schools in Vermont are:

• Bridport Elementary School

• Fair Haven High School

• Johnson Elementary School

• Mount Abraham Union High School

• Northfield Elementary School

• Otter Valley High School

• Rutland High School

• Windsor High School

• Winooski High School

• H.O. Wheeler Elementary School (now called Integrated Arts Academy)

The top 3 school districts I get the most phone calls from parents wanting to start homeschooling are:

1. Fair Haven
2. Rutland
3. Wallingford

Deserted and discarded

This is The Little Red Schoolhouse in our town. Years ago it was a full fledged schoolhouse. In the 1960's it became a community center. When our daughter was 4 years old she attended a free preschool here for 4 days. These days we affectionately refer to her as our preschool dropout. I also spent six years directing a children's theater troupe here on its tiny stage.

Recently, the community center was deserted and discarded when a state sponsored, taxpayer supported preschool program opened in the town's public school system. The public school didn't have room for the paying preschoolers so they placed the program in the local daycare center. Former board members of The Little Red Schoolhouse were great supporters of this new taxpayer preschool program so they deliberately let the corporation status for the community center lapse for 3 years. This dissolved the community center and its programs. A Dork Award is in order here for those former LRSH board members.

Low and behold, the daycare center recently found themselves in an alleged nefarious situation unbecoming to a preschool program. Now a group of parents, led by a homeschooling mom, are reviving the Little Red Schoolhouse and some of its programs, including a playgroup for preschool aged children (they've been told they cannot call it a preschool).

Why is it when the government and public school officials get involved in the learning process they tend to botch everything? Guerrilla Homeschooling wishes this new group of board members all the best and kudos for reviving The Little Red Schoolhouse, especially the homeschooling mom who is working to reinstate this little treasure.

38% of Vermont Schools Are Failing...So What's New?

According to this recent article in the Rutland Herald 38% of Vermont's schools are failing...so what's new? Guess who the school officials are blaming? And they wonder why homeschooling is growing in Vermont at such a rapid rate. Duh!

The Public School Did The Crime But Karen Maple Did The Time!

Digging deep into the photo archives I found this. This is a group photo taken during the Karen Maple case here in Vermont. This is from the day Fox News interviewed Karen at her home in Bakersfield, Vermont. Douglas Kennedy of Fox News and his camera crew spent the day with us interviewing myself, Karen and her son, Trevor. That's Karen in the pink dress and Trevor in the shades. Douglas is standing to the left of Trevor. The two younger children are mine.

It turned out to be a beautiful sunny day and was a great learning experience for everyone involved. It was truly a pleasure to meet Douglas, who is no stranger to politics and controversy, and his crew. Douglas was very kind to Karen and very thorough in his interview. He fairly gave both sides of the issue but most importantly he gave Karen the opportunity to have her story told.

Basically, the matter boiled down to a U.S. citizen being denied her constitutional rights while still operating within the law. It was the local school and Department of Education who were violating those rights and operating outside the law. The harder Karen pushed back to preserve those rights the more devious the state officials became. One of the most irritating things about the whole episode was the state's portrayal of Karen as a sort of country bumpkin', as if that meant it was alright to deny her her rights. Karen was eventually exonerated by the Vermont Supreme Court but the actions of those at the local public school and the VT DOE went unpunished.

Karen Maple is exonerated.

I consider Karen one of the movers and shakers in the homeschool battlefront She endured many hardships along the way but held her ground. To this day I admire her spunk and tenacity and for giving the VT DOE a run for their money.
