The gap in numbers is due to the fact that home-schoolers in Texas are treated like private school students and are not required to register with the state, or anyone for that matter."

"Not required to register with the state..." As it should be in EVERY state!

View a map provided by Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) that shows which states have the most lenient homeschool regulations and which have the most difficult. Remember, if you seriously want to homeschool and your state is not supportive you can always vote with your feet. Move to a better state until your children are grown.

"Matt Breaux, Zack's father, has withdrawn the boy from East Cliff Elementary and he's now homeschooling the boy. The father met with school administrators last week, but was not happy with the outcome."

Seems more and more parents are being forced to consider the homeschooling option. Sure does make my job easier. I don't need to work so hard at convincing parents they're better off OUT of the public schools. Hurray! Another family escapes from the armpit of the world known as public schooling.

Pushing 60 and still can't decide what I want to be when I grow up!

Folks with psychology or psychiatry degrees need to get over their bad selves and accept the fact that parents make better teachers for their own children than certified strangers do. Don't you just love it when uppity-ups like this Dan Miller fellow  presume to tell us how to best educate our own children?

"But, Dan Miller, who chairs the Psychology & Psychiatry Department at Texas Woman's University and worked as a school psychologist for 25 years, says when children are taught only what interests them, they end up with holes in their education."

Holes in their education??? I'm 56, have a college degree and have had countless occupations. I still have lots of 'holes' in my education. To me that is the natural result of living life. An education (and who gets to define exactly what that is?) without holes would be a fierce beast to behold, I'm sure. I think what matters most is that #1...we're happy and #2...we have the ability to learn and keep on learning. Frankly, I still haven't decided what I want to be when I grow up. I'll be darned if some shrink is going to decide for me!

When his wife gave up her $10,000.00 a year job to become a stay-at-home mom they learned how to earn extra cash for their family by buying and selling online at eBay. When did this country start setting up truancy courts? Is Texas the only state with one? Hmmmmmmm.
